My name is Corey Calder and I am an administrative intern and a Health and Physical Education teacher. After graduating from Deep Run High School, I attended James Madison University (GO DUKES!) for my Bachelor’s in Kinesiology and Master’s in the Art of Teaching. If that wasn’t enough, after six years of teaching I put on my student hat to get my Master’s in Educational Leadership.
My health and physical education teaching career in Henrico County started at Tuckahoe Middle School. In addition to teaching I coached football, soccer, basketball, and tennis. Then I hung up my whistle and pursued a career in educational leadership. At this time I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and teach at a high school. I was given the chance to work at Varina High School and never looked back. I absolutely love VHS and our community.
I am a leader that is 100% in it for the students. My educational philosophy is simple, I want to provide an inclusive learning environment that prepares my students to become lifeready. It doesn’t matter if students are in my class or somewhere else on campus, I want them to feel safe and a part of our school community. I pride myself in being one of their biggest fans. I want my students to leave VHS everyday better than when they came to school that morning.
